About the De Liège Project:

De Liège was the conversion of a light industrial-office building into 13 housing units. The existing building was actually two connected buildings one of two floors the other three. These two building also had distinct structural systems.

Instead of maintaining the existing single entry point on the 2 floor building the design approach created 7 2 story "townhouses" each with an entrance on the street. This spatial approach also opened up the roof for a series of terraces connected to each townhouse. Internalized day lighting for each townhouse was also realized. This strategy of doors onto the street (a Montreal tradition) was continued into the 3 floor building. Here the inspiration was more the organization of the typical Montreal triplex, the first two floors have street entrances while the upper most units share an external doorway. The units in this section of the building were also arranged around an urban garden into which is inserted the buildings underground parking access.

The strategy for the elevations created large industrially scaled windows in many of the units. The vertical masonry banding establishes a sense of individual presence for the townhouses while maintaining the unique horizontal form of this long and relatively low urban building.
